Sometimes referred to as a bath mat, the towelling mat is a simple bathroom rug that will be positioned near the bath or the entrance to a shower. The purpose of the bath mat is twofold. First, the mat provides a warm and comfortable spot for bare feet when emerging from bathing or showering. Second, the towelling mat catches water dripping off the person that has bathed or showered and therefore prevented the development of puddles that increase the chance of someone slipping and falling in the bathroom.
As with the towels used in a bathroom, the towelling mat is normally composed of natural cotton fibre that are both resilient and absorbent. Some mats are coated with any synthetic material to avoid slippage, although almost all bath mats are totally machine washable. There are however, some designer mats where hand washing or dry cleaning is recommended.
